Kudos to ktdc for making a real effort for preservation of this natural habitat for migratory birds. Outsider entry is minimized to avoid disturbing the birds. We hired a private guide outside the sanctuary and he was very informative. He showed us the different species. It was a wonderful experience. Go early in the morning, 6-6.30 am. Best time to see birds. View of the lake from inside the sanctuary is breathtaking. ☺

This is a relatively small bird sanctuary, where you can view birds from a watchtower. I believe there were boat rides earlier, but now they are not. Pelicans are the highlight during season - March to July, after which their numbers reduce as they migrate. I went in August, and could see only a couple of pelicans; however there are a lot of other birds. The sanctuary portion is typically on an island, which is not evident from outside; we have to walk about 2 kms to reach the watch-tower to be able to view the birds... and the walk is not easy. The walkway is partly paved, and at places it is slushy. Lot of trees on either sides make it feel like an amazon forest, given the moist weather. The walk typically takes about 30 mins to 1 hour for youngsters to slow walkers. Guides are also available for explaining the different birds at the sanctuary. Entry fee is 50 rupees per person, and the parking fee is 25.

Bird watchers are welcome. The total area is about 200 acres. Here you have a place exclusively for having a stroll and to watch various birds in the confluence of a river and Vembanad lake. Freshwater mangrove forests and other lowland vegetation is seen here in abundance.
