The ashrama was started at the birthplace of Swami Shivananda (a monastic disciple of Sri Ramakrishna) in 1961 and made a branch centre in 1985. In April 2007, Bamunmura Ashrama was taken over by the Ramakrishna Math and made a sub-centre of Barasat branch.
