This is 150+ Years Old Open Air theatre which is located in Old City Area of Vadodara (Baroda) and was the first Open Air Theater in the city. Earlier it was known as Wankaner Theatre. It was built by Maharaja Ganpatrao Gaekwad and was inaugrated by the then Maharaja of Wankaner in Saurashtra. No exact date of inaugration is found but it is said that it was rebuild in Year 1954 by Maharaja Fatehsinhrao Gaekwad and was renamed as Shri Deepak Open Air Theatre. In this theatre, many Gujarati and Marathi artists have done Programs. Famous Bollywood Actor – Dilip Kumar and singer Mukesh also performed here. In Year 1935, Charlie Chaplin was scheduled to perform a Programme as a part of Diamond Jubilee Celebrations on Completion of 60 Years of Rule of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad. But Charlie Chaplin didn’t came to India as he had to be with his ailing mother. This theatre can accommodate ~3500 People which is spread across 85000 sq. ft. of Land. The theatre became a common cultural attraction centre as many plays were staged there. But with emergence of closed hi-tech theatres, open air theatre started losing charm. The theater was re-opened again on 20th August 2015, after a long renovation. Features like Parking, Stage Room, Lighting have been added.
