This is the oldest library in North 24 Parganas, established in 1906. I was in touch with this library in the sixties of the last century. I used to go there in connection with an examination conducted by Lok Shiksha Samsad, Visva Bharati, Santiniketan, It was the centre of that examination, the library used to supply books and question papers for the said examination. Later on I used to visit Shyamnagar and our place of rendezvous was the stairs of the library. This library building was originally the house of Bengali poet, Ray Gunakar Bharatchandra Ray, who had it from the King of Krishnanagar, whose court poet he was. The original building had been demolished by the local municipality caring a fig for the heritage building and a new building was set up. Few years back I was invited in connection with a programme on the International Mother Language Day, I saw the building and surprised to see it. How those people at the helm of affairs could do such a crime in demolishing the heritage building. It is a pity that the old building is no more.
